What does Verizon’s opening of their network mean to you? Not much really. Verizon, unlike T-Mobile or AT&T which use GSM, uses older CDMA technology. So even with Verizon’s new and touted open network, you are still going to have to call Verizon to add a handset to their network. So what difference is going to make whether their network is open or not?

Now if they were on GSM network and opened their network, then it might be worth looking into as you just get a GSM device, pop you SIM card in it and start using Verizon’s new open network, but that cannot happen on the current CDMA network.

As per Sascha Segan’s article in PCMag, “What Verizon is saying today is, “Hey, Microsoft, if you want to hook the next Xbox up to us, we’ll make it easy for you. You too, Ford, if you want to put a Verizon connection in cars. And desktop and laptop makers, we’re not going to stall your production cycles for months. Just go ahead, make something basically compatible, and we’ll speed it through.””
